Before & After: Our Real-life Kitchen Renovation

by Lois Flowers

If you’re somewhat addicted to HGTV like me, you’ve seen more than your fair share of kitchen remodels.

At the beginning, the show host, contractor or homeowners stroll through the room, eyeing all the so-called problem areas with noses slightly turned up, and deem the project a “total gut job.”

Thirty to 60 minutes later, the kitchen—and very often the entire house—has been completely renovated and everyone is ecstatic about all the entertaining they are now able to do with their open-concept floor plan.

For most do-it-yourselfers on a budget, of course, home renovations are nothing like that. They cost less, take a lot longer and are not nearly as expansive.

What happened in our kitchen last fall and winter was real-life remodeling, plain and simple. And while the project wasn’t captured on video for a national cable audience, the end result is something we enjoy every day.

This is actually the second time we’ve given the kitchen a facelift. Not long after we moved in nine years ago, we painted the walls, added a light fixture above the table (strangely, there was none there before) and replaced the cracking tile countertops with laminate (a perfectly acceptable counter covering, despite what the snooty homebuyers on HGTV say).

Over time, we also replaced the ancient refrigerator with the leaky ice machine, the dishwasher that was louder than a freight train and the wall oven/microwave combo that was warm to the touch even when it wasn’t on.

We ended up with a functional kitchen that met our needs for several years. As I wrote last week, though, it was time for a change. And I think the change has been good.

Before, the kitchen seemed dark and heavy. Now it’s light and bright. Somehow, it just feels better.

Although I didn’t realize it until I started taking pictures for this blog post, one of the things I love the most is the way we incorporated the old in with the new. I’ll use the pictures to explain more about that. But before I give you a tour of the new kitchen, let’s take a quick look back.

Our home was a foreclosure, and we bought it knowing we would likely refresh or redo almost everything eventually. Here’s what the kitchen looked like when we moved in.

Next, the space after the first round of updates.

And here is the kitchen today, including a few closeups of some of my favorite features.

I’ve never been a big fan of gold-toned hardware, and when we moved into our house, I wanted to replace all the original brushed brass cabinet pulls (55 in all). We never found ones we liked that fit our budget, though, so we just left them in place. I love how they look with our freshly painted gray cabinets.

Speaking of gold tones, at some point during the last several years, Molly heard me say I needed a new filing system. For the next gift-giving occasion, she gave me a gold file folder rack and a package of gold-embossed file folders. They sat on the floor in the dining room for months, but they’re now the perfect accessory for my desk.

Our kitchen table was pretty beat up from more than a decade of kids’ crafts and homework, meals and even an occasional woodworking project. We couldn’t find a replacement that we liked, so Randy decided to refinish the table. I touched up the chairs, and just like that, we had the “new” table we wanted.

We never used the old trash compactor next to our sink, so Randy took it out, shuffled the cabinets around and installed shelves for baskets. Now we have a designated spot for recycling and all the shopping bags we use as garbage can liners.

One of my favorite parts of the kitchen is the under-counter plate rack that Randy installed during the first remodel. It was a creative way to fill empty spots where old appliances had been, and it’s still a handy way to keep my favorite dishes within reach.

The overall color scheme in the kitchen is pretty subdued, so the light fixture we originally installed above the table brings a much-needed pop of color and ties together all the art and accessories.

I could go on, but you get the idea. Our kitchen renovation didn’t cost nearly as much as the projects you see on TV, but it goes to show that with some wonderful new finishes and surfaces, along with a lot of hard work, dramatic DIY transformations are possible (and perhaps even more satisfying).

Before we end this little foray into all things DIY, please feel free to share about your most memorable home improvement project—large, small or somewhere in between.

Wow, what a transformation! It’s true that you can do a lot for a lot less money than they show on TV. You just need to know where to look for the right supplies. We always shop local rather than big box for that reason. More experts to speak to mean that we end up getting the right products the first time.

Love it! Wow, what a beautiful kitchen. It looks so light and welcoming! The peek into the process has been fun. I think my favorite home renovation project was the bathroom in our previous house- it was so satisfying to rip out the white carpet and peeling wallpaper all in dark colors. Even the countertops were painted (not fun to clean!) So the light, easy to maintain updates were beloved!

Thanks, Bethany! And ugh … who in their right mind would put carpet in a bathroom, especially WHITE carpet? And painted countertops! I can see how cleaning and ripping all that out would be extremely satisfying! 🙂

I love your new kitchen, especially the red dishes. Honestly, renovating is one of my least favorite things to do, but I love the finished project. All those decisions and I am not very good at visualizing what it will look like. We had a forced renovation when our house was flooded years ago. I probably was what pushed me to do it. Enjoy that beautiful kitchen, and thank you for sharing with Grace & Truth Link-Up.

Thanks, Maree. The dishes are my favorite too! We had a similar forced renovation at our last house when our sump pump broke and flooded the basement. It ended up being a much nicer space when all was said and done, but oh, the mess in the meantime! Hugs, friend!

I am loving your kitchen re-do posts … they’re prompting some discussions on moving ahead with the household projects that have already been listed.

I want everything in the house white. My husband thinks I’m crazy. But it’s fun to dream …

I’m glad these posts have helped facilitate the reno discussions at the Stoll house, Linda. 🙂 Good luck with the future projects. (I’m living proof that people can change their minds about colors … I never in my life would have imagined wanting a white kitchen until last summer!)

Your kitchen is so beautiful, Lois! I would want to stay in there and just marvel at it. 🙂 We finally bought a new kitchen table a couple weeks ago, but it will be several more weeks before it will be delivered due to coronavirus backup. I love your table!

Lisa, it takes time to find the perfect table, doesn’t it? (With us, it was right under our nose, covered in dust, scratches and remnants of fingernail polish!) Thanks for your kind words, my friend …

Lois, your kitchen looks beautiful! I love how things ended up tying together so nicely! It does seem like, every time I try to renovate a space in our home, God also does some renovating in my heart. My most recent “update” was my project room (four years ago!). It went from being a junk room to my private work/relax/create space.

Thanks so much, Jeanne. I remember the post (or was it more than one?) you wrote about your junk room project. I can’t believe it’s been four years though … where has the time gone?!! I know what you mean about God using these renovations to do things in our hearts. Hmmm … might be worth some reflection to see what this latest round accomplished in me! Hugs, friend.

I love your kitchen, Lois! In fact, I’m going to show my hubby later how nice those white cupboards and counter top look. 🙂 They really brighten things up. We don’t watch many remodeling shows, but House Hunters is Len’s favorite. I especially like the lakefront and beachfront ones. 🙂 That lamp above the table is so beautiful, too. And I love your desk area. Now I can picture you writing there. 🙂 Randy surely has some neat ideas! I love that basket area. Thank you for sharing, my friend! 🙂 Love and blessings to you!

Thanks so much, Trudy. My favorite HGTV shows are the lakefront and beachfront ones too. 🙂 (My dream would be to live in view of a mountain lake.) If you ever make it to the Kansas City area, I’d love to give you a tour and share a cup of something hot at our refinished table. Hugs, friend!

Your new kitchen looks wonderful. So bright and light. I like to watch those remodel shows, but know from to many home projects we have done, though never a kitchen remodel, that everything takes much longer than you originally think. And living with the mess is a pain. But the end result is beautiful. Love the curvy backsplash and cabinet pulls.

Thanks, Theresa. I didn’t mention the backsplash in the post, but it’s another one of my favorite things in the kitchen. Even the name of the tile (arabesque) makes me smile. 🙂

Our home was also a foreclosure, and you are making me wish I had done a better job of documentation when we did our kitchen renovation. I still have to pinch myself to realize that the light and spacious kitchen we have now is really ours!

Isn’t it fun, Michele? When we spend as much time in a room as we spend in our kitchens, I think it’s OK that just being in there makes us happy!
