Even in 2020, God Was Still at Work

by Lois Flowers

It’s been a year, hasn’t it? A year of unexpected—sometimes even shocking—headlines, heartbreak, disappointment, layoffs, closures, cancellations and empty store shelves.

There’s no end to the conversation about all this, especially now as we’ve moved past the 12-month mark of when it all began (or when it all ended, as the case may be). I understand where people are coming from when they talk about how weary they are and how it’s often hard to see where God is in everything that has happened since last March.

My heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones to Covid-19, those who are unable to see family members across the country or in long-term care, those who have struggled with children at home who desperately need the support of in-person school.

And yet, even as I empathize with all of this, I think it’s OK to acknowledge that 2020 was not a complete dumpster fire for everyone. The losses have been great for many, but there also are those who have seen God’s hand at work in their lives—perhaps more powerfully or obviously than ever before.

My friend Bethany falls in the latter category. I can’t remember when our online paths first crossed, but she’s been a faithful encourager in my life for the last several years at least. She’s a couple of decades younger than me, but I’ve learned much from her wisdom, her thoughtfulness and her diligence in seeking God’s heart and will for her life.

In 2019 and early 2020, she and her husband Matt prayed boldly for direction in a season they called the “big start over.” They didn’t know where they were headed, but they believed they wouldn’t be staying where they were for long.

During this period of uncertainty, they did their best to remain faithful in the small things. Encouragement came in the form of many “tiny answers” to prayer, but no simple yes or no to the big request.

Then, right around the time the country started shutting down due to Covid-19, a full-time employment opportunity came out of nowhere, in a place Bethany and Matt had long desired to live. “God gave me a dream job I didn’t know was real at a company I’ve long cherished,” she wrote later

And so it happened. With entire states in quarantine mode all around them, Bethany and Matt made a cross-country move so she could take a position she didn’t even know existed a few months before.

Bethany shared this with me before she even had her first interview with her new employer. In the early days of the quarantine—and even all these months later—her story has encouraged my heart more times than I can count.

It serves as a vibrant reminder that, no matter how unsettled and uncertain our personal or collective circumstances may appear, God is still at work. He’s still answering prayers, still making a way where there seems to be no way, still leading and guiding and directing.

From a human perspective, many of us have been in a holding pattern for all or part of the last year. And yet, in the spiritual realm—in the heavenly places that are intricately involved with the earthly ones—God is on the move.

We might not be able to see it, but we do have a choice to believe it.

What Bethany had gone through before prepared her for what happened in 2020. Her story is hers to share, not mine, but I can assure you—her life hasn’t always been easy. She’s young, but she has had ample opportunities to learn to trust God, to cast her cares upon Him, to loosen her grip on people and circumstances over which she has had no control.

There’s a lesson in that for us, I think. Her experiences are unique to her, but the way God has worked in her life is not.

What happens before prepares us for what comes later.

I’m not saying we have to constantly be asking “What is God trying to teach me?”—as if we lost our spiritual syllabus or are missing out on His big important message for us in the middle of a trial. I’m simply reminding us that God goes before us and is with us, and that the way He works in others’ lives—rather than serve as a source of envy for us—can actually be a great encouragement.

Take my college roommate Rachel, for example. She went back to teaching in the public school system last fall, but she had actually been in the running for the same position a few years earlier. When she didn’t get it, she continued doing what she’d done for years—instructing her own children at home and overseeing homeschool families in her area.

Then, when the position became available again last summer, she was hired. “Two years before, I was kept from getting this job,” she told me later. “But now—during a worldwide pandemic—for some reason it was the right time.”

God’s timing often doesn’t make sense to us. But it does make sense to Him. And as we seek to trust Him with the unanswered questions of our lives, that truth can provide comfort and peace.

Stories like Bethany’s and Rachel’s strengthen my heart even as I wait on God to answer my own prayers for direction. In an upcoming blog post, I’ll swing the spotlight a little closer to home and share how what happened in previous years prepared me for 2020.

But before I go, I can’t help but ask. Do you have a story similar to Bethany’s or Rachel’s? A tale of unexpected blessing in the midst of uncertainty? A time when God answered a big prayer in a most serendipitous way? If so, please share it in the comments so we can be encouraged by His faithfulness in your life too.

I love hearing positive stories from 2020 after all the hard stories that we’ve also lived through. God never abandons us even in the difficult times! Thanks for sharing this, Lois. I need to reflect back on my own victories in 2020 and give God praise. (And the first obvious praise is I’m still here; I made it through!)

Wow, Lisa … that’s the truth, isn’t it? We’re still here, we made it through. Could have been much different, for sure. Hugs, friend.

It is definitely encouraging to hear stories of where God has been at work even through this last difficult year. I feel like in my own situation I’ve seen little glimpses of where God has been working but there’s still so much I don’t understand. I’m hoping that one day I’ll look back and see more clearly.

What a great reminder, Lois. God Didn’t stop working before the pandemic, during the pandemic, or now that it is winding down. He is always preparing us for the next step in our journey. While this last year has not been the easiest, I see many blessings it has brought. And I see how God was teaching me several years before this happened some of the tools I would need during the pandemic. Which allowed me to better deal with the changes. How loving and wise he is.

What a blessing to be able to look back and see how other seasons of life prepared you for this one, Theresa. I have that same thought when I think of the many months my husband worked out of town after we just moved into a fixer-upper home and my daughters went to a new elementary school. I had to learn flexibility, and fast. Then later, when my parents’ health started declining and I never knew what the day might hold, I was thankful for all that previous flexibility training! Thank you for sharing your experience here, my friend.

I’ve read that many churches had extra unseen visitors when we were all on Zoom for church. In some countries that are hostile to the gospel, people who normally wouldn’t go to a Christian church in person streamed or watched on YouTube. I hope churches will keep these options open even when things get back to “normal.”

I hope so too, Barbara. Only heaven knows what seeds have been sown and fruit harvested as a result of the pandemic.

I can see the preparation you speak of more in my husband’s life than in mine—but that only assures me that God is working in his time and in his way in my life. Even when I can’t see it. The last year has been stressful at times, but it’s also helped me make needed changes.

I hear you, Anita. Sometimes it takes difficult or “unprecedented” circumstances to force needed changes, doesn’t it? We do what we need to do when we have no other choice, I suppose. I’m glad you can see God’s preparation through your husband’s life … that was definitely the case for me with Bethany’s story!

Oh, Lois. I needed to read this post today. I have been petitioning God in my prayers lately, asking for a specific outcome for a certain situation with one of my kids. Bethany and Rachel’s stories are good reminders that even if God doesn’t give us exactly what we want on demand, He sees the WHOLE picture, while I only see a small part of it. God is good, no matter what. Thanks for the encouragement, friend!

Aw, Laurie … I know how hard it can be to trust God with outcomes relating to our children! I’m glad you found encouragement here. And I agree … “God is good, no matter what.”

Ahhh, Lois. What an encouraging post. I’ve definitely seen times when God has used the before to prepare us for the “what comes later.” When my strong-willed son was about nine, we were really struggling with him. I remember the morning I was driving, running errands, and I was talking with the Lord about the latest, heart-hurting incident. I told the Lord, “If he’s like this now, how will I ever handle his teen years?!” His answer to me was, in effect, “I’m using what’s happening now to prepare you for the teen years. When you get there, you’ll be ready.” And, man, has that turned out to be true. He uses the things we’re dealing with now to prepare us for what’s coming in our future.

Aw, Jeanne … God is so gracious to give us what we need, when we need it. The struggles with your 9-year-old son developed the mom muscles you’ve been using in more significant ways these last few years. I’m guessing this pattern will continue for the rest of our lives! Hugs, friend.

I’m glad you were able to make some lasting changes as a result of the pandemic, Corinne. I totally agree about God’s work throughout our lives. I wonder, when we arrive in heaven someday, if we will be able to see ALL those ways. I have a feeling it would blow our minds!

Lois,
I absolutely agree there were many blessings in 2020. The pandemic burst onto the scene in spring, but my garden was also bursting with a brilliant display — the likes of which I’ve not seen before. I’ve been able to have my huband working from home so we can have lunches together and take a mid-day walk. God blew me out of the water with the generosity of donors to the non-profit (RCF, Inc.) which I head up. There were fingerprints of His blessings all over the place! Great reminder!
Blessings,
Bev xx

Great blog, Lois. We often don’t see until later (sometime I guess it won’t be until heaven!) why God allows the timing of things. That’s where our faith and trust come in. One day recently I was praying and thinking about trust… an acronym for TRUST came into my mind: Totally Relying Upon the Savior’s Timing. I’ve come back to it often.
Thanks for your blog. I always get excited when I see a new one arrive in my inbox. I also just wanted to let you know that the links to Bethany’s story (I think they were links) aren’t working.
Have a great week!

I absolutely agree! God is at work behind the scenes and will not be crowded into our simple cause and effect narratives–as badly as we may want that simplicity.
