It’s late April in Kansas, which means—at least for now—that the dogwoods are blooming, the wind is blowing 28 miles per hour and the birds are chirping loudly outside my open windows.
Here on the blog, it’s once again time for Share Four Somethings. Heather Gerwing, the host of this monthly linkup, has adjusted the categories a bit since we last met. Along with Something Loved, Gleaned and Achieved, she’s added Something Saved as an alternative to Something Braved.
One thing I especially love to save is time, which leads me right into the first category …
• Something loved
Sometimes I veer toward nostalgic or sentimental in this category, but today, it’s all about convenience and practicality. Cleaning the large mirror in my bathroom is one of my least favorite chores. The spray gets everywhere and it just annoys me.
One day, it occurred to me that some company might make glass cleaner wipes—like antibacterial wipes, only for mirrors. Much to my delight (and I mean that wholeheartedly), I found some at our local hardware store.
Now, my bathroom mirror looks much better and gets cleaned a lot more often. I only wish I had thought of this sooner.
• Something gleaned
Can you glean something from a song? I think so, especially a poignant hymn like “Be Still My Soul.” Written by Catharina von Schlegel, the original German lyrics were published in 1752. They were translated into English in 1855 by Jane Borthwick, but remain of particular relevance today.
Here are the lyrics, followed by a link to a moving rendition of the song by Kari Jobe.
Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side;
bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
leave to thy God to order and provide;
in ev’ry change He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heav’nly Friend
thro’ thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
to guide the future as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
all now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
His voice, who ruled them while He dwelt below.
Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
and all is darkened in the veil of tears,
then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay
from His own fullness all He takes away.
Be still, my soul: the hour is hast’ning on
when we shall be forever with the Lord,
when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past,
all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.
• Something saved
For our anniversary in March, Randy bought me a new KitchenAid stand mixer. It’s bright red, matches my kitchen perfectly, has a lovely guard that keeps flour from exploding all over the place, and is much lighter than my old one.
I’ve already used it, and I love it.
I suppose I could have used my mixer for the Something Loved category, but here, I’m focusing on my old mixer. The one I bought off Craigslist, maybe eight or nine years ago, for $80.
Putting it back on Craigslist is an option. Even though it makes a lot of noise and nudges its way across the countertop when it’s running, I have a feeling I could easily recoup my money. But I’m saving it.
Someday, my daughters will have their own kitchens, and I’ll hand it down to one of them. They’ve both called dibs, but I’m not making any promises. We’ll see who gets it when the time comes.
• Something achieved
I set a goal, at the beginning of April, to write every morning. Not just for 30 minutes here and an hour there, but for three hours each day.
I didn’t usually reach that number, but I kept after it. The more I worked on my project, the more I wanted to work on it. Which helped me to achieve my overall objective—to finish a first rough draft my manuscript this month.
There’s a long way to go with this project, and no certain outcome. But I’m all for celebrating the milestones along the way, so here’s to a whole lot of words on a whole lot of pages.

Now it’s your turn. Please share your favorite household cleaning shortcuts, hymn lyrics or small kitchen appliance. Or, if you prefer, tell us your own version of Something Loved, Gleaned, Saved or Braved, and Achieved for the last month.

Spring brings such refreshment to our spirit and soul, Lois! Congratulations on finishing your first rough draft! It is a huge milestone and worth celebrating. Woohoo! You did it! I pray for many joyful hours writing this month.
Thanks, Lisa! May hasn’t been nearly as productive so far as I had hoped, but it’s still the first week. (I’m sort of distracted by rain and watching my hostas grow!) I hope your week is going well. 🙂
So much to love in this list – the lyrics are especially beautiful. Congratulations on around 3 hours a day of writing! I love the way writing more makes you want to write more. Happy May!!
Thanks, Bethany! Happy May to you too. 🙂
Milestones are always worth celebrating! Congratulations on your progress! I love that old hymn, and I really love your photo of the old hymnbook on the piano.
Stopping by from SFS
Thanks so much, Kym! I love the hymn too. 🙂
Way to go on your writing goal and completing your rough draft!
Thanks, Heather!
I love that hymn, but I have never seen or heard the third verse. The line “in ev’ry change He faithful will remain” was a mainstay for me several years ago during a year of major changes (a move to a different state, two sons leaving the nest).
I have some similar wipes for dusting. I use a Swiffer duster most of the time, but some of the wood furniture gets more thoroughly dusted with the Pledge wipe. Similar thing–spraying it with Pledge or Endust in a can spatters everywhere.
That’s neat that both daughters want the old mixer.
Good work on getting the manuscript done! I may need to do something similar to make progress on mine. My rough draft is done, but figuring out how to arrange sections is stumping me.
I need to check out those Pledge wipes, Barbara … thanks for the suggestion. And also for the encouragement about my manuscript. Now Randy is reading it for the first time … that will result in another round of revisions, I’m sure. But that’s all part of the process, right? Good luck arranging your sections … that’s definitely a tricky part.
What a beautiful hymn. Love the Kari Jobe version. I always enjoy reading about your month. Blessings.
Thanks, Paula. Good to hear from you this week!
Wipes for the bathroom mirror – brilliant! And, isn’t it (so often) just the littlest of things!! Of course, new KitchenAids are rather amazing as well!!
Amen about the “littlest of things,” Jennifer. Isn’t it rewarding when a small tweak like that makes such a big difference?
I love that hymn too. Recently we’ve been playing the piece it’s from (Finlandia by Sibelius) in the band I play in and I always have lyrics from the hymn going through my mind as we play that section.
Well done on your writing! It sounds like you’re making great progress!
Thanks, Lesley. It’s definitely a work in progress, but it’s good to see some actual progress! I read about Finlandia when I was looking up information about the hymn … I think I need to find it and listen to the whole thing!
Hi Lois,
I have a pack of those glass wipes, that same package in my bathroom and I use it for the same purpose: to clean my bathroom mirrors. I also use them to clean the mirror in my living room. So much easier than using a bottle of glass cleaner. Pull out a wipe, use it, toss it and we’re done here.
You know what I’m talking about, Yvonne. No more spray getting everywhere, so easy!
That’s a favorite hymn of mine as well. And congratulations on your progress with writing!
Thanks, Michele!
Oh, I love to save time, too. 🙂 I haven’t heard of the glass cleaner wipes but I’ll be on the lookout now. I would especially like it for cleaning my car windows (which I never clean, lol). Thanks for sharing the beautiful version of Be Still My Soul! Congratulations on making progress on your writing goal. That’s fantastic.
One of my favorite household cleaning items is a squeegee. I usually just wipe down windows and mirrors with a wet washcloth, then squeegee it off. It’s so quick and easy (until now when I know about the wipes! lol).
Lisa, my mother-in-law keeps a squeegee in her guest bathroom, and I understand why you like them. We have a shower curtain in our bathroom now, but a squeegee definitely would have come in handy when we lived at our last house and had glass shower doors. Live and learn, I guess!
You have been busy Lois ☺️
Blessings,
Jennifer
It’s definitely a work in progress, Jennifer. Good to hear from you, my friend.
Congratulations on staying after your writing goal! My motto recently is “Slow progress is still progress!” I have seen the wipes but haven’t used them, glad to know they are worth it 😉
“Slow progress is still progress.” I love it, Cindy—you’re absolutely right!
genius tip for the bathroom!
Thanks, Beth! 🙂
Lois, I love this version of this precious hymn. I have it on as I type. I seem oblivious to this artist so shall pursue her music! Thanks. I love it that you are writing each day and for a big hunks of each day. That is wonderful, Lois.
I intended ti do this “four somethings” for the first time but it did not get done. Maybe next! May God guide your steps, watching over each one.
Thank you so much, Linda. The good thing about Four Somethings is that there’s always next month, right? 🙂 I’n glad I could introduce you to Kari Jobe … she does a beautiful version of “The Blessing” too. Hugs, friend.
Congratulations, Lois on staying after your writing goal; like I used to tell my kids, “little by little, big things get done!”
I love that you got a new mixer! I did too about 3 years ago, bright red like yours! And I saved my old Kitchen Aid and happily passed it on to my youngest daughter when she got married-and she was thrilled!
Thank you for the beautiful words about the hymn, “Be Still My Soul”, it is one of my all time favorites!
How fun that you also have a red mixer, Donna! And thanks for your kind words about my writing goal … I love what you used to tell your kids about getting things done. So true. 🙂
Hello Lois! I am always so encouraged by that hymn. It so eloquently expresses the deep settledness we have in all that Christ is. Have I already told you that we have the same hymn book? There are so many ways our lives run parallel!
My favorite cleaning item? Norwex cloths. They are great for bathrooms, kitchens, mirrors/windows and dusting!
Brenda, I feel the same about “Be Still My Soul.” ❤️ And how fun that we have the same hymn book! I don’t think I’ve ever heard of Norwex cloths. I need to check those out … thanks for the tip. 🙂
