Happy Summer! The days are officially getting shorter now, but there’s still plenty of sunshine to be enjoyed in the coming months. (Along with fireflies at dusk, the sight of which brings me all sorts of joy.)
I say this every month, at least to myself, but I can’t believe it’s already time to link up with Heather Gerwing for another Share Four Somethings. Starting with …
Something Loved
Before we went to Yellowstone National Park a few weeks ago, I heard from several people how awe-inspiring it is. I figured it would be wonderful, but I had no idea.
For three full days, we spent hours in the car, gazing out the windows, trying to take it all in. Every time we went on a new stretch of road, it was like entering another country with even more jaw-dropping scenery than the last stretch.
My favorite parts involved water—several waterfalls, Yellowstone Lake, Yellowstone River—and a mountain pass that was both terrifying (for someone who is a bit scared of heights) and breathtakingly beautiful.
Speaking of water, it still boggles my mind to think that three days before devastating floods hit Yellowstone, we had visited the north entrance of the park and driven on roads that basically no longer exist now. I feel badly for all the people whose livelihoods depend on the tourism traffic that is on hold indefinitely, not to mention everyone who had planned to visit Yellowstone later this summer.
We normally take our family vacation in August. I don’t know exactly why we changed things up this year, but I’m so glad we did.
Something Gleaned
Comforting truth from a favorite Psalm:
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? …
If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. ~ Psalm 139:7, 11-16
Something Braved
Until about five years ago, I was afraid of making bread. I think it was because yeast intimidated me, I had never done it before, I was scared of messing it up.
Then one day, I just decided to give it a try. You can read all about it here, but the bottom line is this. Overcoming my fear of making bread gave me confidence to push through other, far more significant fears.
I thought of all this a few days ago when I opened up my Magnolia Table: Volume 2 cookbook and made, for the first time with no help from anyone or anything except my stand mixer, a recipe called “Garlic Knots.”
We had them for dinner that night and this is all that was left when we were done:
Are you avoiding or putting off something you don’t think you can do? Go for it, my friend. You never know how good it might feel (or taste) to do it—or how far the ripples will go.
Something Achieved
I’ve been blogging since September 2014, and last week I hit “publish” on my 400th blog post. As I shared in that post, I never set out to reach this milestone. Now that I’m here, though, I’m nothing but grateful. Blogging has taught me so much about writing, about community, about encouragement, about God’s timing and provision.
If posting every week ever becomes drudgery, or stressful, or not fun, I’ll probably stop. But I can’t see that happening anytime soon.

Now it’s your turn. Please share in the comments if you’ve ever been to Yellowstone (or another amazing national landmark) or if conquering a silly fear has ever helped you tackle something more serious. Or, if you prefer, tell us about your own set of Four Somethings from the past month.

I love Yellowstone! And those garlic knots look delish – I need to bust out my Magnolia cookbooks. Congrats on 400!
Thanks, Heather. I love my Magnolia cookbooks. And Joanna’s cooking show. 🙂
I’m so glad you got to go to Yellowstone before it had such trouble! I regret that we haven’t been yet, but hopefully we can rectify that in the next year or so. Although I’d like to avoid the mountain pass if possible. lol.
Yeah, that might be a good idea, Lisa. 😂 I was gasping with awe and struggling to breathe at the same time when we were on that stretch of road. I do hope you can go sometime though … it’s definitely worth the trip.
your trip is so inspiring. we’re wondering where to go and when. i’m longing to be out and about … i know you understand!
I do understand, Linda. We went to Alaska after my parent died and it was so therapeutic. I hope you are able to find a lovely place to rest and refresh.
I love your pictures from Yellowstone! We might not ever get to visit so I loved seeing it through your eyes. 400 posts is awesome, congratulations on that milestone!
Thanks, Cindy! I’m glad I was able to give you a glimpse of Yellowstone—God’s creativity is astounding, isn’t it?
Lois what a wonderful month. Thank you for sharing your pictures of Yellowstone, simply stunning.
Thanks, Paula! It’s hard to fathom that it’s even better in person!
Your trip looks and sounds amazing!! So glad you all got to go. I love Psalm 139 too, and I’ve tried bread and failed (but might try it again sometime ha!) So appreciate you! : )
It wasn’t Yellowstone, but a friend and I went hiking the other day and accidentally took a trail that involved climbing boulders. It was very unexpected, beautiful, fun, and exhausting!!
Bethany, your hike sounds wonderful … just the type of activity I would enjoy with Molly. 🙂
I’m so glad you got to go to Yellowstone! My husband always wanted us to go, but so far we haven’t yet. I had not heard about the flooding–how awful.
The garlic knots look great! I tried making bread a few times when we were first married, and it came out dense and heavy. I never did figure out what I was doing wrong.
Maybe it was the recipe? You were a lot braver than I was when I first got married … I was in my mid 40s before I tried making bread!
What a gorgeous waterfall, Lois! Thanks for sharing it with us! I’m so glad your family was able to visit Yellowstone this summer. The bread looks yummy! Congratulations on your 400th blog post! Wow! That is a wonderful testimony of God’s faithfulness to and through you in the area of writing and encouragement.
Thanks, Lisa. It is a blessing to be able to share the gift of words, isn’t it? 🙂
Lois, your photos are just beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing them. And the garlic knots! It’s amazing how much tastier homemade bread can be!
I’m glad you like the pictures, Joanne. I can’t take credit for all of them … we put all our pictures in a shared album and I drew from that when I was putting together the post. 🙂 And yes, the taste (and smell) of homemade bread is the best!
Thank you for refreshing my heart with these breath-taking photos of Yellowstone, the comforting words of the Psalm, and your other sharing, Lois. 🙂 I always enjoy your four somethings. Bravo for you working with yeast. 🙂 It can be kind of tricky, can’t it? Love and blessings to you!
I’m glad your heart was refreshed by the pictures, Trudy. Yes, yeast is tricky but I have come to enjoy using it … watching it bloom fascinates me for some reason. Love and hugs to you, my friend.
Your trip sounds wonderful and the photos are amazing! Well done with the garlic knots and on reaching your 400th blog post – I’m glad you still enjoy posting. I am always encouraged by your words!
Thanks so much, Lesley. I feel the same about your writing. 🙂
We visited yellowstone years ago when my girls were younger. It is still an amazing memory for all of us. We often refer to it when enjoying time together. Thank you for sharing. I too am afraid to make bread. Don’t like rolling and kneading and waiting!! But I love the bread!
Helen, I think we made some timeless family memories at Yellowstone too. 🙂 And I hear you about loving the bread. (And also the way it smells when it’s baking!)
Congratulations on 400 posts! That is a milestone. I have never been to Yellowstone but the Grand Canyon had much the same effect on me. Just thinking about it reminds me of what an incredible God we serve!
I agree, Donna. To bring such beauty into existence with a mere word or thought–my mind can’t comprehend it!
Four hundred posts!! Congratulations! And thanks for sharing your vacation photos. I have always wanted to visit (and still do) but not sure if it will happen….so I will soak it in through others (for now). Hooray for making homemade bread. I am still intimidated by yeast. Truly…but the idea of homemade yeast rolls is so alluring!!
Thanks, Jennifer! I’ve never made yeast rolls either … I should put that on my list of things to do sometime soon. 🙂
Lois, your trip truly was the trip of a lifetime! As lovely as the photos are, I know they do not do justice to what your eyes recorded.
Psalm 139 is one of my favorite psalms, It’s mind boggling to grasp all God has for us there!
Congratulations on the bread making! I LOVE making bread, I actually find it therapeutic!
I do too, Donna. 🙂 And yes about Yellowstone–the glory of God’s creation is unsurpassed, isn’t it?
Yellowstone is on my bucket list
I hope you can go someday. 😊
I’m so glad you were able to have a wonderful trip. Your pictures are gorgeous. Congratulations on your 400th blog post and conquering your fear of making bread. So fun to try new things. 🙂
Thanks, Lisa! I agree about new things, although I haven’t always felt this way. 😂
