Happy spring! I am a lover of winter, but even I have my limits. Hereβs to daffodils and peony shoots and birds chirping loudly in the morning.
My college girl and I were busy thrifting and running errands and visiting an art gallery and French pastry shop last week, so I didnβt have much time to come up with the usual Four Somethings for this monthly linkup.
Fortunately, Iβm OK with veering off the beaten path every so often. My most recent postβabout praising God, come what mayβgot me thinking about other things that lift my spirits, so I decided to dwell on that a little longer.
This month, instead of focusing on Something Loved, Gleaned, Braved and Achieved, Iβm sharing Four Somethings that encourage my heart. Starting with β¦
β’Β Smiles
Iβve always enjoyed exchanging smiles with people I see, including strangers. (I probably got this from my extroverted mom, whose smile was a mile wide and always on the ready.)
Masks made this more difficult for a while. Now, though, I think this type of interaction is even more meaningful. It actually makes me feel better to smile at people and have them smile back. And it doesnβt cost a thing, which is always a plus these days.
When weβre in the heat of the battle, the dense fog of uncertainty or the drudgery of the wilderness, it can be difficult to see Godβs hand at work in our lives. Itβs not until the battle subsides or the fog lifts that weβre able to glance behind us and see what was really going on.
It doesnβt happen every time, of course, but my heart is encouraged when I can look back and catch a glimpse of what God might have been up to when He allowed things to happen the way they did.
β’Β True love
The other day, one of the hosts of a podcast I was listening to was talking about what love looks like. As he quoted 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a in his slow Louisiana drawl, I stopped what I was doing and felt myself relax.
Loving othersβin our daily lives as well as on social mediaβisnβt always easy. But it encourages my heart to think that, as God gives us strength, each one of us can decide to conduct ourselves in this gracious way:
βLove is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.β (NIV)
β’Β Real-life conversations
I greatly appreciate authentic online interaction, but few things encourage my heart as much as real-life conversations. Sometimes theyβre accidental, like when I run into an old friend at the grocery store and we spend several minutes catching up in the poultry department.
Then there are more intentional interactions like coffee dates and scheduled phone chats with friends. Whether weβre talking about books, loss, our children or our favorite thrift stores, these verbal conversations are lifegiving and uplifting, especially when doused throughout with laughter.
β’ β’ β’Β
Speaking of conversation, now itβs your turn. What is encouraging you these days? Or, if you prefer, stick to the usual four somethings and share something loved, gleaned, braved or achieved. Iβll try to return to the regular format next month (though, as always, Iβm holding those plans loosely).

I like your 4 Somethings, Lois! I’m struggling a bit with a couple of the new categories. They don’t seem to fit with how I look at myself or my life (as courageous or an achiever). Thanks for going out of the box a bit.
Meanwhile, yes to SMILES all around! One of masks many limitations. I still have to wear a mask when I’m with my mom and truly hate that my visits with her in this final season come only if half my face is covered.
I know you understand.
I do understand, Linda. My heart aches for you, my friend. β€οΈ
What’s encouraging me these days? Being grateful in spite of everything that seems not good in this world. Cultivating a grateful heart so that I can have a positive perspective. Sunshine and long walks.
Aw, βsunshine and long walksβ sound lovely, Nylse. And amen to intentionally working on having a grateful heart. β€οΈ
Smiling gets all the ‘feel good chemicals’ flowing in our brains Lois. I missed smiles too during mask time! So glad smiles are back! π
Blessings,
Jennifer
Donβt you just love that God designed us with those βfeel-good chemicalsβ built in, Jennifer? Hugs, friend.
Lois, this was such a blessing to read your march edition of your Share Four Somethings.
I’m glad you enjoyed it, Paula. Have a good weekend, my friend!
I love how each of your four things has to do with connection – connection with others, connection with God, connection with ourselves as we reflect. π
I never even thought of that, Brie … thanks for pointing it out!
I missed smiles during the mask months too! This list made me smile. Here’s to someday having one of those real-life, in-person chats! π
Bethany, that will be a wonderful day, for sure! π
When masks were mandatory here, I had one that said, “I’m Smiling!”
I love it, Heather!
I am also one who loves to smile at people (and wave in the neighborhood) and it makes me happy when people respond. I am really missing real-life conversations and interactions. I loved this post π
thanks, Cindy … it was good to hear from you! I hope you are able to get back to real-life conversations and interactions very soon. π
Lois, I love sharing smiles too! So glad to be “out” and about able to do that again. In fact the other day at the grocery store a little girl looked so sad and forlorn, a little afraid too. Mom was distracted, and I smiled big right at her and her face lit up & she couldn’t take her eyes off of me. Oh the priceless value of human interaction!
Amen, Donna. What a gift you gave that little girl at the store. I hope you’re having a wonderful week, dear friend.
Lois,
Oh how I’d missed seeing people’s smiles and being able to greet others with a smile — not sorry to see the masks go! I am encouraged by things that tickle my funny bone and make me laugh. The other night I got a rare case of the giggles after my husband said something witty. Since there’s a lot less to laugh about these days, a good belly-laugh truly lifts my spirits.
Blessings,
Bev xx
Oh my, Bev … I’m 100 percent with you about the wonderful effects of laughter, and when it’s with someone else it’s even better. I remember sitting in the back seat of my car and rolling my eyes when my parents would get to laughing about some random thing. Now I’m the one in the front seat laughing with Randy while my daughter rolls her eyes in the back. What comes around goes around, I guess. π
I love this post and I love your beautiful smile, Lois. π I’m always encouraged to see the signs of spring and God’s faithfulness in continuing to bring them. My heart still fills with hope at the sight of robins. It’s still cold here, but spring is coming! Love and blessings to you!
Aw, thank you so much, Trudy! I feel the same way when I see cardinals … although they’ve been around all winter too. π Love to you, my friend.
Sometimes when out running errands, I tend to have blinders on and forget to interact. During the height of the pandemic, I tried to purposefully smile at people to reduce some of the tension in the air. (When you get old enough, you have eye crinkles, so people can see you’re smiling even with a mask on. π ) When I do pause to pay attention and smile and say a word here or there, it makes such a difference in the day.
It is a blessing to look back and see how God may have used a situation that was puzzling at the time. I wonder if, in heaven, we’ll spend some of the time learning what God was “up to” behind the scenes of some of those encounters.
I kinda hope so, Barbara. And I did the same thing during the height of the pandemic … smiling with our eyes is better than not smiling at all, for sure. And especially when everyone seems to be on edge for so many reasons … it definitely lessens the tension.
Ahhh, Lois. This post made me breathe deep and smile. I’m with you, I love being able to smile at others, strangers and friends alike. When they smile back? Bonus! I’ve been greatly encouraged by seeing glimpses of things God is doing in various areas of my life. And a wonderful anniversary weekend away with the man of my dreams.
Happy anniversary, Jeanne! I’m so glad you were able to get away with the man of your dreams. π We spent a good part of our anniversary at a robotics tournament, which was fun in its own special way.
Uncovering our smiles seems to uncomplicate social things.
I went to a real live in person Bible study today and that was delightful!
I agree about the smiles, Michele. Life is best lived unmasked, on so many levels. In-person Bible study does sound wonderful!
Things that uplift me? Spending time with one or more of my grandkids or in this season some of the littles (great-grands), a trip with my husband, lunch with friends, and teaching God’s Word. Have a blessed week, Lois!
Those activities all sound very uplifting, Donna. I hope you’re having a good week too!
It is so nice to be able to smile at people again without a mask. I’m looking forward to an in-person conversation today with one of my best friends. I know it will be nourishing. Thanks for veering off the beaten path with your four somethings, Lois.
Thanks for following me down my little rabbit trail, Lisa. π I hope you had a lovely in-person chat with your friend.
What a wonderful way to share your Four-Somethings. I think it’s OK to break the rules because the point is mindful reflection.
My 2022 WOTY is encouragement; therefore, your words on this topic gave me an extra boost today!
I’m glad you were encouraged, Barb. π And I love the tie-in to your WOTY!
I actually love winter the most as well. Although I will admit, I was excited about the spring days we had experienced and now winter is revisiting π We can so rely on calendars, weathermen, and woodchucks to predict our seasons, but it’s been good to be reminded that there is only One in control of the seasons. And He is in control of our days as well. I’m taking comfort in this today π
PS – The pillars in the museum are beautiful!
I think I’d be OK with winter revisiting too, Joanne. π I love your perspective here … it reminds me of a favorite Casting Crowns song, “God of all our days.” Hugs, friend.
