We’ve had a bit of a break this past week, but overall, itโs been unseasonably hot and dry around here this summer. This is typical Kansas weather for July and early August. But when the temperatures soar, the grass goes dormant and the rain clouds disappear in June, it can be downright discouraging.
Thatโs why an unexpected rainstorm that blew in a couple weekends ago was such a relief, physically and emotionally. You donโt realize how parched you are from the oppressive heat and lack of moisture in the air until the heavens open and dump out an inch of rain on a Saturday afternoon.
Randy and I threw open garage door so we could fully enjoy the downpour. I perched on a paint-splattered step stool; he settled next to me on an overturned nursery pot. We had nothing else to do and nowhere else to be. We just sat there quietly and soaked in the coolness, the sound of the rain sloshing out of leaf-packed gutters, the raindrops hitting the street and bouncing up again.
A bunny hopped across the driveway, stopping once to shake itself off like a little wet dog before disappearing under our daughterโs car. It would have made a sweet picture, but neither of us wanted to break the mood by rushing into the house to retrieve a phone. We just watched the scene as it unfolded in front of us and took its place among our favorite summer memories.
It was a mental oasis, a rest stop in the midst of a hectic, sometimes-confusing season.
Iโve experienced other bits of refreshment tooโglimpses of glory and grace that have captured my attention on the radio, on the pages of scripture, just outside a mostly ignored window and even in my parched flowerbeds where only the heartiest specimens are thriving this year.
Thereโs the pot of impatiens in the basement window well that catches my eye whenever I come down the stairs. Stark against a faux brick backdrop, untouched by the Japanese beetles that have wreaked havoc elsewhere in my yard, the cheery pink and white flowers bring me joy every time I pause to look at them.
So do the hibiscus plants that originated in the field behind my sisterโs house and the patches of four oโclocks that multiplied from two little seedlings my mom gave me years ago.
Some summers, the four oโclocks take over the entire flower border. This year, theyโre more sparse but just as prettyโopening and closing every day in their beautifully choreographed blooming dance.
Then, as I read through the Book of Isaiah each morning, itโs God’s promises and the ways He describes His work in our lives that are revitalizing my spirit and lifting the burdens of this particular summer.
For example, let these eternal truths saturate your mind today:
โข โDo you not know? Have you not heard? Yahweh is the everlasting God, the Creator of the whole earth. He never grows faint or weary; there is no limit to His understanding. He gives strength to the weary and strengthens the powerless.โ (Isaiah 40:28-29)
โข โDo not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with My righteous right hand.โ (Isaiah 41:10)
โข โI will be the same until your old age, and I will bear you up when you turn gray. I have made you, and I will carry you; I will bear and save you.โ (Isaiah 46:6)
Finally, I was on my way to a nearby grocery store several weeks ago when I first heard Phil Wickhamโs song โLiving Hopeโ on the radio. I pulled into a parking spot and sat there with tears in my eyes as the powerful message worked its way through my soul.
If you have a moment to listen, maybe it will encourage your heart as much as it still encourages mine.
These are few of the refreshing “rest stops” I’ve encountered this summer. How about you?

Awww, Lois. I love the steady hope and life that flows through your words. I love how you find little beauties in your days. And the song? Love it. I’m adding it to my playlist.
May God continue to refresh your spirit and your flowers with His rains.
I’m not surprised you loved the song, Jeanne. ๐ Thank you for your encouraging words, my friend. I hope you are enjoying the last few days of summer … when do your boys go back to school?
Your words share such hope. I found myself nodding in agreement and left feeling renewed by your words. Phil Wickham’s song was also a fresh word of hope. I have always loved him.
Same here, Mary. I’m glad my post about rest stops was a bit of a rest stop for you! ๐
Lois, I loved that you let up the garage doors to just sit a spell. There is something about the sound, sight, and smell of rain that brings peace and comfort. And thank you for sharing this beautiful song!
I know what you mean, Joanne. I love the smell of rain, especially when I haven’t smelled it for a long time! Hugs, friend!
Lois,
I’ve just had a long rest stop at camp and I needed it! Thanks for sharing such an encouraging post. Praying you find rest for your soul that uplifts your spirit ๐

Thanks for your kind words, Sherry. I’m glad camp provided the rest stop you needed this summer!
Rest stops- what a great concept! Iโm glad youโve had some of those thisnummer. My rest stops have mostly been in our sun room. Sometimes when Iโm out there the dog climbs into my lap and I hear the birds or crickets and every reason to get up and get to the next thing pauses for a bit. Thank the Lord. And thank you for sharing these thoughts and verses!
I’m so glad your sun room has been such a source of joy and rest for you, Bethany. (Send me a pic sometime if you think of it … if I can’t have my own sun room, at least I can catch a glimpse of one that is so well-loved!) ๐
Such lovely pictures – both the ones you took and the one you painted in my mind’s eye. We have had our share of rain the last couple days…..I think I need to stop and enjoy the showers a bit more!
It’s good to meet you here, Jennifer … thank you so much for your kind words. ๐ Here’s to enjoying rainy days whenever we get them!
Thank you, Lois, for posting that video. I’d not heard that song before and it’s totally inspiring. How deep and true.
Hugs!
I’m glad you liked the song, Pearl. It’s one of my favorites right now! ๐
Yes. You’ve painted summer so very beautifully, Lois. All is well …
And the music. Jesus Christ is our hope forever.
Amen, my friend! ๐
Such beautiful flowers. And listening to the song now for a bit of refreshing. “You donโt realize how parched you are…until the heavens open…” Thanks for opening the heavens up for us a bit more, Lois.
Aw … thanks, Lisa! ๐
